Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has announced that its Large Scale Solar (LSS) project located in Kuala Langat, Selangor has reached its initial operation date (IOD) with the first generated power transmitted to the National Grid last week. Work is progressing for the solar plant to generate its full capacity of 50 MW before the end of the year.
The plant is comprised of 230,000 solar panels and 10km of 132kV power and fiber optic underground cable, and spans 98 hectares. In development since July 2017, it is the largest utility-scale solar project to be developed in Malaysia to date.
The Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) contractor for the project is TNB Engineering Corporation Sdn Bhd.
The Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry of Malaysia has set a target of 20% of the country's electricity to be generated from renewable sources by 2030, a substantial increase from the current 2%. Some 53% of Peninsular Malaysia’s power generation is from coal, 42% natural gas and 5% hydropower, together with other forms of renewable energy.
