Lightsource BP to develop 150 MW solar PV project in New Zealand

Christchurch Airport has selected Lightsource bp and Contact Energy as its partners for the development of the first 150 MW phase of the Kowhai Park solar photovoltaic (PV) project in the South Island of New Zealand.

The first phase of the park will initially be able to generate 290 GWh of clean energy per year, which will be used to support the aviation industry's transition away from fossil fuels. The solar farm, which is estimated to include 300,000 solar panels, will be built on a 300-ha site adjacent to the airport's runways.

With Christchurch Airport aiming to hasten the decarbonization of industry in New Zealand, battery energy storage and renewable hydrogen generation are also planned for the precinct in the future.

Construction of the solar farm is anticipated to begin in 2024, pending a final investment decision.
