BNDES approves a US$303-million loan for the development of Brazilian wind projects

The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) has recently approved BRL1 billion (US$303 million) in financing for the construction of three wind farms.

The plants, currently being built in the states of Bahia and Ceará, will generate 311.3 MW of power, enough to supply about 700,000 homes.

The three plants are owned by French group EDF, Italy's Enel and Aliança, a subsidiary of Vale and the Minas Gerais Electric Company (Cemig).

EDF will contract financing in the amount of BRL486.4 million (US$147.6 million) for the construction of the Ventos da Bahia  I, III, IX and XVIII wind farms, all in the municipality of Mulungu do Morro. The company will also use the resources to build the transmission system.

Enel will contract BRL307.8 million (US$93 million) in financing to help build the Delfina III, IV, VI and VII wind farms in the municipality of Campo Formoso (also in Bahia), as well as for the transmission system.

The BNDES also informed that Aliança will contract financing in the amount of BRL243.5 million (US$73 million) to help build the Santo Inácio III and IV, Garrote and São Raimundo wind farms and their associated transmission systems, all in the municipality of Icapuí (state of Ceará).

The BNDES said in a statement:

"The wind farms will help diversify the Brazilian energy grid with a clean and renewable power source."

"The projects will also help Brazil meet the greenhouse gas emission reduction targets to which it has committed under the Paris Agreement."
