Arizona Public Service (APS) has announced plans to purchase the power produced by a 50 MW battery to be built and operated by Invenergy under a 20-year contract.
The storage facility is intended to meet demand when energy usage peaks, especially late in the afternoon when solar production declines. This demand has traditionally been exclusively met by natural gas.
Invenergy will also add battery storage systems with a cumulative capacity of 200 MW to existing solar power plants in the state, located in south-west USA. Six systems to be located in Maricopa County and Yuma will in place by 2020. The remaining two upgrades will be completed by 2021.
These projects are part of a number of initiatives announced that will collectively add 850 MW of battery storage and at least 100 MW of new solar generation to APS' portfolio by 2025.
