Holcim US has partnered with NorthStar Clean Energy to deliver the cement company's 25 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project to be installed on 100 acres of its cement plant in Alpena, northeast Michigan, USA. When combined with existing renewable energy initiatives, the solar project will provide 75% of the plant's electric power needs, a significant step towards meeting Holcim's commitment to power all its US operations with 100% renewable energy by 2030.
The solar array will utilize bifacial solar panels to optimize energy yield, reducing CO2 emissions by around 25,000 tonnes annually and generating over 30% of the plant's current energy demand. The Solar Equipment Service Contract, with a minimum term of 20 years, means Holcim will receive around 35,000 MWh of clean power from the solar project per year.
Holcim has also recently launched an innovative tire-derived fuel (TDF) facility at the Alpena plant which converts 22,000 tons of tires annually into energy, supports the sustainable reduction of the plant's reliance on fossil fuels while diverting tires from landfills and streams.
