EnergyAustralia’s 50 MW/245 MWh Stage 1 Hallett battery energy storage system (BESS), co-located with a gas-fired power station, has reached financial close and is moving into the delivery phase.

The project, situated 210 km north of Adelaide, will later expand under the already-approved Stage 2 with an additional capacity of 150 MW/600 MWh. The first stage will deliver five hours of energy storage and progress from the planning phase to a final investment decision in less than two years. Construction is scheduled to begin in Q2 of 2026, with commercial operations anticipated to commence by mid-2027. The battery will be integrated using the existing infrastructure at the Hallett Power Station, reducing the requirement for additional transmission upgrades and limiting land use and environmental effects. Working alongside the current 235 MW gas-fired power station, the battery will enhance the site’s function as a flexible energy centre by delivering rapid and adaptable storage to support renewable energy, while allowing the gas facility to continue supplying reliable power during extended periods of high demand.

Italy-based battery system integrator NHOA Energy will supply batteries and inverters, while South Australian engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company Enerven will deliver civil, electrical and construction works.
