FS Bioenergia began construction of its second corn-ethanol plant in Brazil. The project is located in Sorriso, Mato Grosso state, west-central Brazil. The project uses biomass from a 30,000-hectare eucalyptus forest producing as much as 680 million litres (179.6m gallons) per year of ethanol. The plant has also an estimated annual cogeneration capacity of 170,000 MWh, enough to meet the demand of a city with 70,000 inhabitants. Operation is expected in 2020.
In addition to the plant in Sorriso, the company is currently working to double the capacity of its 265-million-litre Lucas do Rio Verde plant, the first corn ethanol facility in Brazil. The project uses fiber-removing technology during the ethanol production process, improving yield and efficiency by creating co-products rich in essential nutrients.
