Environmental review started for 2.4 GW wind project in USA

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has announced that it will launch an environmental review for 2430 MW Beacon offshore wind energy project in the waters off Massachusetts, USA. This is part of the government’s initiative to generate more renewable energy in the country. BOEM will publish a Notice of Intent (NOI) this week to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project. This review is necessary to ensure the effective management and implementation of the proposed wind energy project while taking into consideration the potential impact on the environment.

The wind energy project is expected to have a significant positive impact on renewable energy in the region. It will generate enough energy to power over a million homes in New York once contracted. This project will include the construction and operations of two separate facilities with up to 155 turbines. Beacon Wind will also feature two offshore substation platforms and two offshore export cables. The latter will be planned to make landfall in Astoria, New York, and Waterford, Connecticut.

The BOEM is encouraging public participation to better understand the potential environmental consequences of the proposed project. During the public comment period, BOEM will hold two virtual and two in-person public meetings for the Beacon Wind EIS to receive feedback from the public.
