ENOVA has commissioned the 65 MW Meppen wind farm in Germany following a two-year construction period. The repowered wind farm now features nine Vestas V172 turbines with a combined installed capacity of approximately 65 MW, generating enough renewable electricity to meet the needs of about 46,500 three-person households. This milestone marks the completion of ENOVA’s largest repowering project to date. The turbines rank among the biggest and most powerful onshore units currently being installed in Germany, with a rotor diameter of 172 metres, a hub height of 175 metres, and an overall height of 261 metres. Expected to produce around 163 million kWh of electricity annually, the upgraded facility is projected to generate nearly four times the output of the 14 turbines that were originally commissioned at the site in 2002.
Community participation was a central aspect of the project, with both the landowners and the operators of the 14 existing turbines offered the opportunity to invest in and benefit from the new wind farm. The upgraded facility is also expected to deliver broader economic benefits to the local area. Under Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), the town of Meppen receives a share of the wind farm’s electricity-related revenues and benefits from trade tax generated by its operations. In addition, five percent of the annual lease income is allocated to support charitable and community initiatives within the municipality.
