Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded the development of the AED1.437 billion (US$391.3 million), 250-MW Hatta pumped-storage hydroelectric power project to a consortium consists of Strabag Dubai LLC, Strabag AG, Andritz Hydro and Ozkar.
The hydropower project will utilize the water in Hatta Dam as the lower reservoir, with a new upper reservoir to will be built in the mountain. The turbines will use solar power from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park to pump water to the upper reservoir. The efficiency of the power generation and storage cycle will reach 80% within 90 seconds of the response to demand for electricity.
The project is expected to be operational by February 2024.
