Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has made a work progress of 23% at the 250 MW Hatta hydroelectric power plant at Hatta Dam, Dubai. The AED1.42 billion (US$386.81 million) project has been awarded to Strabag. It has a storage capacity of 1,500 MWh and a lifespan of 80 years.
The hydroelectric power station will generate electricity by making use of the existing water stored in the Hatta Dam, which can store up to 1,716 million gallons, and an upper reservoir that will be built in the mountain that can store up to 880 million gallons. The upper reservoir will be 300 meters above the dam level. The project will also enable flood control and storage of drinking water in the Hatta area.
DEWA is also implementing two pioneering projects in Hatta, including Dubai Summit and Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls. The Dubai Summit project includes the construction of a 5.4-km cable car to transport tourists to the summit of Um Al-Nesoor. The Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls project will use the slope of the upper dam to create a natural waterfall. A waterway will be built along the parking area below the dam.
