CPS Energy to add 350 MW Battery Energy Storage to Grid in USA

CPS Energy has announced plans to add 350 MW of battery energy storage system (BESS) to its power grid in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

CPS Energy has signed two storage capacity agreements (SCAs) with Eolian L.P. for a total of 350 MW of BESS. This follows a 50 MW SCA signed with Eolian in 2023, as part of the utility's Vision 2027 generation plan. The BESS, named "Ferdinand" and "Padua 2," will have storage capacities of 200 MW and 150 MW, respectively. Both projects will be newly constructed in South Bexar County, Texas, and are expected to be operational in the first half of 2026. Building on the 50 MW Padua 1 project currently under construction for CPS Energy, the additional 350 MW of four-hour battery energy storage will introduce new dispatchable capacity to the San Antonio area by mid-2026. These projects are expected to meet the energy needs of the San Antonio community for the next 20 years.

Dykema Gossett PLLC served as external legal advisor to CPS Energy in connection with the negotiation of the SCAs.
