Construction to be started on 500 MW/1,000 MWh Grid forming Battery project in Australia

AGL Energy has reached a final investment decision for its 500 MW/1,000 MWh Liddell project in New South Wales, Australia.

AGL is advancing the development of a 500 MW, two-hour duration battery at the Hunter Energy Hub, situated on the grounds of the retired Liddell coal-fired power station. With a projected cost of AUD 750 million (USD 505 million). AGL plans to finance the battery through its balance sheet, utilizing operating cash flows and existing debt facilities, including recently secured green capex loans. The project will receive support from a AUD35 million (USD 23 million) Arena grant and a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA), facilitated by AEMO Services on behalf of the NSW government.

the project is slated to commence in early 2024, with operational commencement targeted for mid-2026
