Acciona has announced that it has put the 183 MW El Cortijo wind farm, located in Tamaulipas, north-east Mexico, into operation. This is the first power plant to commence operations under the new Wholesale Electricity Market regime in Mexico.
It is also the first project awarded in the auctions associated with the Energy Reform to commence operations. Commissioning began in mid-June of this year, after a construction period of only 15 months. The park consists of 61 Nordex wind turbines with an individual capacity of 3 MW.
El Cortijo will produce electricity from renewable sources equivalent to the consumption of 350,000 Mexican homes. It will avoid the emission each year of more than 429,000 tons of CO2, equivalent to the photosynthesis of 21.5 million trees.
