Vattenfall has announced that from 1 January 2019 it is the new energy supplier of GVB, the Amsterdam Transport Company. The duration of the contract is 10 years and runs until the end of December 2028.
The green electricity will come 100% from the Netherlands, with power generated by the recently built Slufterdam wind farm to be used specifically for GVB. In addition, extra sustainable generation capacity will be realized in collaboration with Vattenfall to meet the energy requirements of the company.
GVB is a major consumer of electricity and wants to be climate-neutral from 2025; the additional greening of electricity consumption is the next step in achieving this. The company consumes just as much energy as 45,000 households in Amsterdam. That will even be around 55,000 households when the electric buses start to run.
One of the cooperation points between the companies concerns the development of a so-called 'energy hub'. The intention is that GVB's building will receive a large sunroof. The idea is that Amsterdammers can also benefit from this extra generation capacity. In the coming period the companies will look at how this can best be achieved.
