The Alpha Wind Energy Generation project was granted an environment license from national authority ANLA. The wind farm would include 65 wind turbines producing up to 250 MW in the village of Limoncito.
As perv ANLA Director Rodrigo S Suárez Castaño it was the first license of wind energy generation granted by that entity. Colombia has some wind power but apparently none licensed and produced by an in-country group.
ANLA predicted the Alpha project would reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 330,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
Colombia currently is mainly dependent on hydropower, coal and natural gas for its electric generation needs. A 2017 report from Stanford University noted that the country was ripe for wind power investment, thought it currently only had one farm with capacity of around 19.5 MW.
