Vestas has confirmed a previous conditional agreement to supply turbines for Equinor’s 810 MW Empire Wind 1 project located 15-30 miles South of Long Island in the USA. The project was part of a larger Preferred Supplier Agreement for the combined Empire Wind 1 and 2 projects which was announced by Vestas in October 2021.
The Offshore Wind facility will feature more than 130 wind turbines that power approximately 1,000,000 homes in the USA. It covers an area of 80,000 ac and is located southeast of Long Island. The project features V236-15.0 MW turbines and about 150 km of 66-kV XLPE-insulated inter-array cables capable of transmitting twice the current industry standard ensured by 33-kV systems.
Empire Wind is a 50-50 partnership between Equinor and BP. Equinor will be the operator through the development, construction, and operations phase of the project. Once operational the project will generate 2.1 GW of renewable energy per year.
