Technology providers for 1.4 GW subsea interconnector between UK and Denmark

National Grid and Energinet, the owners of 1.4 GW Viking Link interconnector between Denmark and the UK have announced their chosen cable and converter station suppliers for the UK’s first ever subsea electricity interconnector to Denmark.

The 1.4 GW high voltage direct current interconnector, which will be the longest in the world when completed, will stretch 768 kilometres between the two countries connecting Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire and Revsing substation in southern Jutland, Denmark. The project will involve the construction of a converter station in each country and the installation of submarine and underground cables between each converter station and underground cables between the converter station and substation in each country. The interconnector enables the more effective use of renewable energy, access to sustainable electricity generation and improved security of electricity supplies.

The project will consist of two parallel HVDC cables which will be manufactured and installed by Prysmian Powerlink S.r.l. and NKT HV Cables AB.

Siemens will be supplying and installing equipment for two converter station sites in Lincolnshire, UK and Revsing, Denmark.

The three contracts have a combined value of EUR1.1 billion (US$1.2 billion).

Viking Link will now move from development to the construction phase, with work in the UK and Denmark beginning in summer 2020. Construction on Viking Link is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

Viking Link would carry enough electricity to supply 1.4 million households.
