Sinopec launches USD828 million wind-solar green hydrogen project in Mongolia

China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has launched its first hydrogen demonstration project in Inner Mongolia, called the Inner Mongolia Erdos Wind-Solar Green Hydrogen Project.

The project aims to produce green hydrogen using solar and wind energy resources in the Erdos region, with a projected annual production capacity of 30,000 tons of green hydrogen and 240,000 tons of green oxygen. The facility will cover wind and photovoltaic power generation, power transmission and transformation, hydrogen production by water electrolysis, hydrogen storage, and transport, with an investment of CNY5.7 billion (US$828.04 million).

The project has achieved several technological breakthroughs, including hydrogen production under renewable fluctuating power conditions. By leveraging advanced clean energy production technologies such as wind, power, and hydrogen production by water electrolysis, Sinopec has been able to reduce hydrogen production costs, improve system efficiency, and guarantee safety and reliability. The installed power-generating capacity of wind and PV power will reach 450 MW and 270 MW respectively, while the hydrogen production by water electrolysis will achieve a capacity of 30,000 tons annually, and the hydrogen storage capacity will reach 288,000 standard m3.
