EnBW and Enbridge have completed the installation of 44 of the 87 wind turbines in its Hohe See and Albatros offshore wind farms in the German North Sea which are being developed as one 610 MW joint project.
The capacity of Albatros farm is 112 MW and it comprises 16 Siemens SWT-7.0-154 turbines. The capacity of Hohe See is 497 MW and it comprises 71 Siemens SWT-7.0-154 turbine, rated at 7 MW. Hohe See is located around 95 kilometres north of Borkum and around 100 kilometres north-west of Helgoland, while Albatros is being constructed 105 kilometres from each coast.
Installation vessels “Brave Tern” and “Blue Tern” provided by Fred.Olsen Windcarrier AS are loading the components for four wind turbines at a time at the port of Esbjerg in Denmark and attach them offshore to foundations already installed in the seabed.
The installation work on Hohe See and Albatros projects has started in April 2019. The total of 87 wind turbines with 609 megawatts of installed output are due to be connected to the grid by the end of 2019 and will produce as much energy as a modern gas power plant.
The green electricity generated by the wind farms will generate 2.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity that will cover the aggregate requirements of all the private households in Munich. Total project CO₂ savings will be around 1.9 million tonnes/year.
The investment costs for the construction of the Hohe See wind farm come to EUR 1.8 billion (USD 2 billion), while constructing the Albatros wind farm will cost an additional EUR 0.4 billion (USD 0.45 billion). In order to finance the offshore wind farms from their construction through to commissioning, EnBW has secured the Canadian energy infrastructure company Enbridge Inc. as an investment partner: Enbridge Inc. has acquired 49.9 percent of the shares in EnBW Hohe See, while EnBW will retain the remaining 50.1 percent. This investment provides us with scope for the further development of new projects. Enbridge will co-develop and build the projects, while EnBW will handle ongoing operations and maintenance.
The installation of the first wind turbine for the 497 MW Hohe See offshore wind farm in the German North Sea was completed. The erection of the first wind turbine represents an important milestone in the construction work which is moving ahead at pace.
