Construction started for onshore substation for 1 GW offshore wind project in Denmark

RWE has commenced construction on the onshore substation for its 1 GW Thor offshore wind farm project in Denmark. The onshore substation will be built in the municipality of Lemvig. Siemens Energy will carry out the civil engineering and construction works together with MT Højgaard Danmark

The Thor wind farm is located approximately 22 km from Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland, Denmark. The project comprises of 72 wind turbines which are capable to produce enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households. Half of the wind turbines will be equipped with CO2 -reduced steel towers from Siemens Gamesa. The towers’ steel plates are made of greener steel that produces at least 63 percent less CO2 emissions compared to conventional steel.

Once fully operational, which is anticipated to occur no later than 2027, the offshore wind farm will be the country's largest to date.
