SSE Renewables has selected Vestas as the turbine supplier for its 50 MW Aberarder Wind Farm in the Scottish Highlands.
Vestas will supply and install twelve V117-4.2 MW wind turbines, operating at 4.3 MW each, at the Aberarder site in Strathnairn near Inverness. The Aberarder project secured a 15-year contract for low-carbon power generation in the UK's fifth Contract for Difference (CfD) Allocation round in September 2023. SSE made a final investment decision for the Aberarder Wind Farm in May, committing approximately GBP 100 million (US$ 128 million), with construction set to begin by the end of 2024 and completion expected by late 2026.
Once operational, the site will generate enough green energy to power nearly 60,000 homes annually and displace around 30,000 tons of CO2 equivalent in its first year. The Aberarder Wind Farm will be situated on a natural plateau at an average altitude of 700 m above sea level, adjacent to the operational 94 MW Dunmaglass Wind Farm, which is jointly owned by SSE Renewables and Greencoat UK Wind.
