The electric utility provider of Puerto Rico has chosen Sunrun to develop a 17 MW virtual power plant (VPP). By networking more than 7,000 Sunrun solar-plus-battery systems on homes, the VPP would slash energy costs for consumers, reduce pollution island-wide, and fortify Puerto Rico's grid with stable, abundant solar electricity.

Sunrun will enroll consumers next year and start networked dispatches in 2024. Customers will save money on on-site energy generation and backup power and be reimbursed for strategically sharing their stored energy with Puerto Rico's power grid, creating a sustainable energy economy. VPP batteries will maintain sufficient backup reserves to power participants' houses during grid interruptions. All battery consumers can enroll and drop out at any time throughout the 10-year term.

The provisions of the agreement were accepted by the Governing Board of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority on October 26, 2022. The deal is subject to regulatory approval by the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau and the Fiscal Oversight Management Board.
