RWE is planning to develop a 100 MW electrolyzer that could produce 1.7 tons of gaseous hydrogen per to be installed in Lingen, Germany. The first hydrogen is set to flow to ThyssenKrupp’s blast furnace in Duisburg.
The hydrogen required for iron production is to be produced by electrolysis, in which water is broken down into hydrogen and oxygen. The companies agree that only electricity from renewable sources should be used to operate the electrolyzers.
The conversion of the blast furnace is to be carried out by 2022.
