RWE has completed the installation of a 117 MW/128 MWh battery system project in Germany. A total of 420 lithium-ion battery blocks have been placed in Lingen (Lower Saxony, 49 MWh) and Werne (North Rhine-Westphalia, 79 MWh).
The projects are virtually connected to RWE's run-of-river generating stations along the Moselle River. The company is able to deliver additional energy as balancing energy by selectively adjusting the flow rate at these units. As a result, the grid stabilization capability of the system increases by up to 15%.
The project has already contributed power to the grid and is currently undergoing testing. Within the next few days, commercial operations will commence.
