Developers are keen to submit their interest for Portugal’s first ever solar-only auction.
The Portuguese government plans to tender for 1.4 GW of solar generation capacity. With the auctions in question due to be completed by August 10, the Environment Ministry has announced that a ceiling price for the tender will be set at EUR45/MWh (US$50.6/MWh).
The investors had sought as much as over 10,000 MW of new capacity. Out of 24 locations to install solar panels, only one found no bids, and one had an instant winner, while 22 licenses will require auctions where bidders offering the largest discount off the energy tariff will win.
Environment and Energy Transition Minister Joao Pedro Matos Fernandes said that 64 entities are competing in the tender, many of them are foreign investors.
