Kibo Energy, an Africa-focused energy developer, renewed an MoU with Electricidade de Mocambique (EDM) for the Benga coal-fired fossil-fuel project in Mozambique. Kibo will build and operate the 150-300 MW Benga coal-fired IPP with its joint venture Termoeléctrica de Benga.
The said project is currently in the feasibility study stage and EDM is now awaiting the results. Kibo is negotiating the PPA with potential partners.
In January 2010, a coal power plant was proposed by Australian mining company Riversdale in Benga for $1.277 billion. The proposed plant will be 2GW fueled by coal and to supply energy to a coal mine on the same site.
In February 2013, the project was canceled. The current plan for the Benga coal-fired project is smaller but still intended to be supplied by coal producers.
