Emirates Water and Electricity Company PJSC (EWEC), an Abu Dhabi Power Corp, is set to award the contract for the construction of the 2-GW solar project in Al Dhafra by the first quarter of 2020.
EWEC has issued a tender for the project and has attracted 48 expressions of interest (EoIs) with 24 firms pre-qualified to bid in the tender for the financing, construction operation and maintenance of the solar complex. The accepted firms could also place an optional bid for battery storage capacity.
The solar project will be implemented under the independent power producer (IPP) model. The selected developer or consortium will own up to 40% of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) that will be formed for the project with the remaining equity be in the hands of local entities.
The project is set to begin its commercial operation by the first quarter of 2022.
