Construction of the main building at Millerhill Recycling and Energy Recovery Centre (RERC) has been completed. Commissioning activities are now at an advanced stage.
The facility is being developed by FCC Environment, which signed a 25-year contract to deliver and operate the £142 million (US$186 million) plant in October 2016. FCC Environment has contracted the lead Engineering, Procurement, and Construction role to a joint venture formed by FCC Medio Ambiente SA and Hitachi Zosen Inova.
The project is expected to treat around 135,000 tonnes of household residual waste and a further 20,000 tonnes of commercial waste every year. It will produce approximately 94,000 MWh of electricity annually to satisfy the energy demands of up to approximately 32,000 households in the the City of Edinburgh and Midlothian. It is anticipated that it will avoid greenhouse gas emissions equaling 30,000 tonnes per annum, equivalent to removing 13,800 cars from the road for the lifetime of the project.
The plant is also a combined heat and power (CHP)-ready; it has the potential to supply excess heat from its operations to nearby homes and businesses.
The 33.5 MW energy-from-waste plant has been granted an environmental permit. The facility, located at Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire, will be developed by Veolia. The environmental permit allows the inc...
