BP is partnering with Hydrogen Chemistry Company (HyCC), a newly launched company by Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG) and European chemicals company Nobian, to develop a 250 MW green hydrogen project in the port area of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Named as 'H2-Fifty project', the hydrogen plant will produce up to 45,000 tones of green hydrogen from renewable energy and water. The hydrogen will be used in BP’s largest European refinery for desulphurization, replacing the ‘grey hydrogen’ made from fossil fuels that are currently used in this process. It will save up to 350,000 tons of CO2 per year.
The developers will continue the partnership in the development of the plant design and executing environmental studies for the licensing process. The final investment decision for the project is targeted at 2023.
