Allete Clean Energy has refurbished more than 50% of the 3 wind turbines of the projects, namely: 108 and 80 MW Storm Lake I and II wind projects in Iowa, and the 104 MW Lake Benton wind project in Minnesota.

The company declared in summer of 2017 a USD 80 million investment to replace certain blades, gearboxes and generators at 385 wind turbines. The 45th set of new turbine blades were recently received from Tecsis. Aside from the upgrade, the renovation also includes the installation of new fiber optic connections, servers, and data acquisition and management systems. The refurbishment is being implemented in phases through 2020 so as to minimise turbine downtime

The combined portfolio can produce 700 GWh of electricity annually. The power outputs of Lake Benton is contracted through 2028 while the 8 MW of Storm Lake 1 is contracted through 2032. The company is currently looking to sell the remaining output as the contracts expire this year. The Storm Lake 2, however, has their contract extended until mid-2020.

With a total combined capacity of 290 MW, the portfolio qualifies for federal production tax credits (PTCs).
