240 MW/480 MWh BESS Project becomes operational in Australia

Australian electricity transmission network operator Ausnet has successfully energised the 240-MW/480-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. The standalone facility is located next to AusNet’s Tyabb Terminal Station and will support the transition to renewables by helping balance peak and off-peak periods. It will store electricity that will be equal to the power consumption of around 40,000 homes.

AusNet was the project’s connection partner. Its job included the energisation of the 220-kV terminal station, a 300-metre overhead transmission line, and a new transformer bay. Valent Energy is the owner of the BESS scheme, which originated with Sydney-based renewables developer Maoneng. Construction was launched in October 2024, two years after the grid connection assessment approval was awarded by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). The Mornington facility is equipped with batteries supplied by China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd and inverters by Power Electronics.
