Wood appointed as owner’s engineer for 753 Onshore wind Farm in Sweden

Wood has been appointed by Luxcara GmbH as owner’s engineer on its Önusberget wind farm development, located in Sweden’s Norrbotten County, near the town of Piteå.

Upon completion, the 753MW project is set to become Europe’s largest wind farm. The development will play a substantial role in supporting Sweden’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2045.

Andy Hemingway, President of Energy, Innovation & Optimisation at Wood, said: “As the largest of its kind in Europe, the Önusberget wind farm will make a significant contribution to the European clean energy market. Wood has supported around 20 per cent of global wind power generation capacity with our design, optimisation, construction, and operation expertise, and we are delighted to now be partnering with Luxcara on this flagship project”.

Since 2019, Wood’s multi-disciplinary team has provided extensive planning, technical, and management support throughout the project’s pre-construction phase. As part of the new contract, Wood will provide owner’s engineering services, including establishing a full-time site presence to monitor the quality and progress of the works.

The facility is powered by 137 Cypress 5.5 MW turbines, a powerful turbine with a 158-meter rotor, ideally suited for the project site's wind speeds and climate. The turbine blades are equipped with an innovative ice mitigation system, ensuring a stable level of availability and reduced downtime.
