Uhuru Energy secures US$51 M for 310MW solar plant in Zimbabwe

Independent Power Producer (IPP), Uhuru Energy, has obtained US$51 million from an unnamed Chinese State-owned firm for the first phase of a its solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Zimbabwe. 

The total project investment is estimated a US$300 million. It involves the development of a combined solar photovoltaic power plants with a total capacity of 310 megawatts.

The project will be developed in phases. Phase one will cost US$60 million while phases 2 to 4 will cost US$240 million. Phase one and two of the project will be set up in Donnington West in Bulawayo. The company is currently looking for other sites across the country to complete other phases.

The Chinese investor will avail 85 percent of the funding for the project. The company will also undertake the construction. Construction work is expected to begin at the end of the third quarter in 2018 and take 18 months.
