Tender Launched for 1GW Pumped Hydro Energy Storage project in Australia

The government of Queensland and Powerlink in Australia has launched a request for information (RFI) seeking an adviser for Borumba Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) project.  The adviser will provide Front End Engineering Design (FEED), detailed project analysis, and a detailed analytical report including engineering and design, hydrological modeling, geological testing, and assessment of environmental impacts.

The project is located about 70 km southwest of Noosa in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. It is an integrated energy and water security brownfield development encompassing the existing Borumba Dam as a lower reservoir, located approximately 50kms south of Gympie, and will have a 1 GW/24 hours storage capacity.

In late 2020, the Queensland Government requested Powerlink undertake the required activities to allow the Government to make an investment decision regarding commitment to the ongoing development of PHES projects, in the context of a longer-term plan for the electricity supply system.

The RFI will enable Powerlink to evaluate the Supplier’s capability and capacity to satisfy project requirements without requiring the Respondent to incur the costs associated with the preparation of a fully detailed tender.

The deadline for the submission of documents for the tender is on August 27, 2021. Tender information can be accessed on our business opportunity page here
