Punjab-EPA approves 720 MW Karot Hydroelectric project

Pakistan’s Environmental Protection Agency (Punjab-EPA) has approved the 720 megawatt (MW) Karot Hydropower Project.

The project had been submitted to Lahore for final approval.

The new facilities will be located on the Jhelum River near village Karot in Kahuta tehsil 65 kilometres from Rawalpindi city. A group of Pakistani and Chinese investors were awarded the contract to develop and operate the hydropower plant during a period of 30 years.

The total project investment is estimated at US$1.4 billion.

Land procurement will be the investor’s responsibility.

The project is expected to be connected to the national electricity grid in the year 2020.

In 2007 the site was offered as an Investment Power Project (IPP) by the Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB). The feasibility report was prepared in March 2014.
