The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has sought project proposals for the design and building of a 200 MW solar power plant in the Samanalawewa reservoir, Sri Lanka.
After obtaining approval for a pilot initiative supported by South Korea, plans are in motion to establish Floating Solar Panel Power Plants on reservoirs managed by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority. The Samanalawewa reservoir is the second largest reservoir in Sri Lanka and has a surface area of over 12,000 hectares. The floating solar PV power plant will be located on a portion of the reservoir's surface and will consist of over 400,000 solar panels. It is expected to generate enough electricity to power over 100,000 homes and will help to reduce Sri Lanka's reliance on fossil fuels. Expression of interest will be issued for two separate projects each with a 100 MW capacity
Sri Lanka is proceeding with the pilot project, monitored by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology on behalf of the Korean government.
