Neoen plans Hybrid Renewable Energy Facility in Australia

Neoen Australia Pty Ltd is seeking Development Authorisation for the 1.8 GW Goyder South Hybrid Renewable Energy Facility (Goyder South) in South Australia that will combine solar, wind and storage components.

Neon submitted the development application to the Regional Council of Goyder. The development application was released for public exhibition and comment. Neoen encourages all local residents to have their say on the project and may submit a representation to the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP). The closing date for representations is 18th September 2020.

The proposed project site is located south of Burra and north of Robertstown in the Goyder Regional Council area. At its full size of approximately 1,200 MW of wind, 600 MW of solar, and 900 MW/1,800 MWh (2 hours) of battery storage Goyder South would generate more than 4,8 TWh of power annually.

The wind farm component will be powered by up to 163 turbines with a maximum hub height of 160m, a maximum blade length of 80m and an overall maximum height (tip height) of 240m. The solar farm will occupy an area accommodating 3,000 ha and will feature bifacial solar panels. Neoen will deploy lithium-ion battery for the storage component.

Given the scale of energy generation that would ultimately be achieved by the development of the Goyder South project, it is proposed to be constructed in multiple stages. It is not yet possible to be certain about the size and composition of each stage as this depends on the size and type of demand from electricity customers. Neoen hopes to construct Goyder South in approximately three separate stages, each comprising:

  • 400MW wind;
  • 200MW solar; and
  • 300MW/600MWh storage.

The investment of the project is estimated at more than AUD 3 billion (USD 4.2 billion).
