Masdar, together with Finnish investment and asset management group Taaleri, has started the commercial operation of the 200 MW Baynouna Solar Photovoltaic Park located near the capital city of Amman in Jordan.
The project has secured a 20 year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Jordan's state electricity provider, National Electric Power Company. The solar farm is expected to produce up to 560 GWh of clean energy per year which is enough to power up to 160,000 homes and offset about 360,000 tonnes of carbon emission per year.
Financial institutions that supported the Baynouna project include the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), the KfW Group's DEG, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) has issued invitations for prequalification for the construction and operation of 30 MWp of solar power capacity to be split across two locations in the country. The electricity generated by the solar plants will power water pumping stations.
