Wind power tariffs in India falls to a record low of INR2.64 per unit

The wind tariff in India has touched lowest level of INR2.64(0.0404US$) per kWh in the second wind auction conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) on behalf of Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India.

The tariff discovered is significantly lower than first wind auction concluded at INR3.46 (US$0.0525) per kWh in February this year. With improving technology and reducing tariffs Ministry is not only confident of achieving the target of 175 GW by 2022 but exceeding it.

Against the 1000 MW of capacity tendered, SECI received 12 bids totalling to 2892 MW capacity of which 9 bids with a cumulative capacity of 2142 MW were shortlisted for e-reverse auction.

Finally, five winners have been selected for total 1000 MW capacity wind power projects:

Company Capacity Tariff (INR)
Orange Sironj 250 MW 2.64/kWh
ReNew Power 200 MW 2.64/kWh
Green Infra 250 MW 2.65/kWh
Inox Wind 250 MW 2.65/kWh
Adani Green 50 MW 2.65/kWh

These wind projects are to be commissioned within 18 months from the date of issue of Letter of Award by SECI to successful bidders.

As we reported in June, SECI launched the tender process for 1,000 MW of Interstate Transmission System (ISTS)-connected wind power projects under Tranche-II. With the success of the first 1,000 MW wind auction, the MNRE decided to launch another round of wind auction for wind power projects, which will be developed on a build own and operate basis

SECI mandated, that developers could bid for a minimum 50 MW and maximum 250 MW capacity with an upper tariff ceiling at US$$0.062/kWh.
