Ilmatar has launched a technical survey of the seabed over a 600 sq km area north of Aland, Finland, in preparation for a 2.1 GW offshore wind project. The Finnish Parliament granted authority to conduct an exploration at the end of August 2022.
The planned wind farm will be connected to both Sweden and Finland, and it is anticipated that it will produce around 10% of Finland's yearly electricity demand. The site is divided into two project areas which, utilizing present turbine technology, are capable of producing 10 TWh annually.
Ilmatar Offshore finances the seafloor surveys which are undertaken by Arctia. The preliminary work is expected to be completed by the start of 2023, after which the collected data will be analyzed and utilized as the basis for the environmental impact assessment.
The survery results will include high-resolution photographs of the seafloor and data on sub-bottom sedimentation, underlying bedrock, and water depths throughout the entire area.
