Iberdrola began the procedures for the development of its first solar photovoltaic plants in the Spanish region of Castile and Leon. The total capacity of the projects will reach 350 MW.
The plants will be developed in Ciudad Rodrigo (300 MW) and Villarino (50 MW), in the province of Salamanca.
The new solar plants will reinforce the company's renewable leadership in the country and also in Castile and Leon, where it already manages more than 5,100 MW hydraulic and wind capacity.
The Ciudad Rodrigo photovoltaic plant, whose construction is planned in 2021, will be composed of 826,200 solar panels, and the generation of employment during its execution, during the peak period of work, could rise to 800 workers. The company's photovoltaic commitment in the region will be completed in the short term with another 50 MW solar installation in the Salamanca municipalities of Villarino de Los Aires and Trabanca.
Together with these initiatives, Iberdrola has gained access to the network for the installation of 500 MW more of renewable power, which will be completed in a large wind farm of 300 MW, and a 200 MW photovoltaic installation.
Iberdrola's renewable energy investment plan in Spain provides for the installation of 3,000 new MW until 2022. Until 2030, the company's forecasts point to the installation of 10,000 new MW.
At present, and with these processes underway, the projects under construction or in process - wind and photovoltaic - of Iberdrola in Spain rise to more than 4,000 MW in regions such as Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Castile and Leon, Navarra, Aragon, Murcia, Cantabria and Andalusia.
Last week the European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced that it invested EUR76.5 million (US$85 million) in one of the largest solar projects in Spain. The project, sponsored by Encavis AG and Solarcentury, involves the construction and operation of a 300 MWp photovoltaic solar plant in the Spanish region of Extremadura, more specifically in the municipality of Talayuela. The transaction is supported by the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI), the main pillar of the Investment Plan for Europe, also known as the Juncker Plan.
