PSE and Litgrid, the transmission system operators of Poland and Lithuania, have made final investment decisions regarding the implementation phase of the Harmony Link interconnector project - a submarine power line between Poland and Lithuania.
Litgrid will be responsible for the installation of the HVDC cable, while PSE will be responsible for the converter stations in Lithuania and Poland. Both companies, separately for their part of the work, will select contractors, sign contracts and carry them out.
When completed, the EUR700 million (US$854.28 million) Harmony Link project will be an approx. 330 km long undersea cable power line (of which approx. 290 km will be by sea), which will connect the Żarnowiec substation in Poland with the future Darbėnai substation in Lithuania. The interconnector will be based on HVDC technology with a capacity of 700 MW. The expected completion date is 2025.
Harmony Link will be the second power connection between Poland and Lithuania - the LitPol Link overhead power line has been operating since 2016, connecting the Ełk substation in Poland and the Alytus substation in Lithuania. The submarine cable will improve the energy security of the region, contributing to the synchronization of the power systems of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia with the synchronous area of continental Europe. The project is co-financed under the EU's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) with a grant worth over EUR500 million (US$610.28 million).
