EDF Renewables commissions 344 MW Onshore wind complex in Brazil

French company EDF Renewables has started the commercial operation of a 344 MW Folha Larga Norte wind complex in the state of Bahia in Brazil

The Folha Larga Norte wind farm consists of 82 wind turbines and is located in Campo Formoso in the state of Bahia, one of the windiest in Brazil. The power the wind farm now generates would cover the equivalent of the annual energy needs of 850,000 Brazilian homes.

In all, 800 workers were involved in construction of the project. EDF Renewables, which undertook to provide professional opportunities for local residents, implemented a plan to train and hire workers from the Campo Formoso area and hence, up to 67% of the workers were local employees.

The company launched construction of the project following the award of long-term energy contracts in two Brazilian federal competitive tenders in 2018. The plant has also been awarded Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), including a 20-year PPA signed with Braskem, a leading petrochemicals company in the Americas.

This 344 MW new wind farm represents another step forward in implementation of the EDF Group’s CAP 2030 strategy of doubling its worldwide renewable energy capacity from 28 GW to 60 GW net between 2015 and 2030.
