Masdar has signed a concession agreement with Angola’s Ministry of Energy and Water to develop a 150 MW photovoltaic (PV) solar project in the Quipungo region in southern Angola.
The agreement was signed during the COP28 climate conference in the UAE. The solar power project, located in Hulia province, involves ground-mounted installations and is poised to provide renewable energy to approximately 90,000 households. Angola has outlined an objective to elevate its national electrification rate to about 60% by 2025. The Quipungo solar project is an integral component of Masdar's broader commitment, to develop 5 GW of renewable energy projects spanning Angola, Uganda, and Zambia.
Once completed, the solar facility will displace over 224,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year, the equivalent of removing 50,000 cars from the roads.
Total and its partners have launched the Zinia 2 project, a deep offshore short-cycle development in an area 150km off the coast of Angola, known as Block 17. The launch follows the developers' final investment decision (FID) to proceed with the project, which has a budget of US$1.2 billion.
