BOEM begins review for 880MW offshore wind project in USA

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is planning to begin an environmental review of a proposed 800 MW Sunrise offshore wind project in New York, USA. The offshore wind project is developed by Sunrise Wind, a joint venture of Ørsted and Eversource, with support from Con Edison and the New York Power Authority

BOEM has issued a notice of intent (NOI) to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the construction and operation plant of the wind project. The NOI will open public consultation for a 30-day period, with the aim to determine the scope of the key issues, environmental impacts, alternatives as well as mitigation measures to take into consideration and analyze in the EIS. Based on the review, a full environmental analysis will be prepared to determine whether the Sunrise wind project is approved.

Located at least 30 miles east of Montauk Point, the wind farm will be virtually unnoticeable to Long Island residents and beach visitors. The project will consist of 122 wind turbines with a generation capacity of between 800-1,300 MW. Set to be fully operational in 2025, the offshore wind farm will be able to power nearly 600,000 homes. In addition, it will help New York to achieve a carbon-free energy grid by 2040.
