Alberta to launch renewables auction

On November 22, 2015, the Government of Alberta (GOA) announced its Climate Leadership Plan (CLP), which outlined policy direction for the Renewable Electricity Program (REP), including the principles of:

  • Ensuring the electricity system continues to be reliable.
  • Accomplishing the transition with policies that fit with Alberta’s unique energy market.
  • Using a market mechanism, such as auctioning, to keep the costs of renewables as low as possible.

Now, the Government of Alberta (GOA) has recently tasked the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), the not-for-profit entity responsible for the planning and operation of the Alberta interconnected electric system, to develop and implement the Renewable Electricity Program (REP) to bring on new renewable generation capacity over the period to 2030.

The schedule for the Renewable Electricity Program (REP) implementation has been advanced:

  • Information gathering and analysis Completed questionnaires due March 25
  • AESO provides Draft Recommendations to Government in May 2016
  • Program development throughout Q2-Q3 2016
  • Launch of first REP competition expected for Q4 2016
  • First REP projects in service since Q2 2019

As the first phase of the engagement, the AESO has made a questionnaire both for developers and investors that interested parties may respond to and submit to the Alberta electric operator. The questionnaire has been established to evaluate different viewpoints relevant to the Renewable Electricity Program. You can see the questionnaire through the following link:

The deadline for responses is March 24, 2016.
