Sembcorp Industries and the Energy Market Authority (EMA) have inaugurated the Sembcorp Energy Storage System (ESS), the largest ESS in Southeast Asia, which spans two ha of land on Jurong Island, Singapore.
The utility-scale ESS in Banyan and Sakra region has a maximum storage capacity of 285 MWh and can cover the daily electricity requirements of about 24,000 four-room HDB households with a single discharge. Its ability to store and supply power in milliseconds is vital for minimizing solar intermittency in Singapore's tropical climate, which is caused by changeable weather conditions. The ESS is an integrated system comprising more than 800 large-scale battery units and includes liquid cooling systems or built-in air conditioning systems to maintain optimal operating temperatures. It can also supply power grid reserves, freeing up power-producing plants to fulfill demand when needed.
The system was commissioned in six months and began operations in December 2022.
