Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC)

Company description

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is a Taiwanese multinational semiconductor manufacturer and the world’s largest dedicated independent foundry, headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Founded in 1987 by Morris Chang, the company pioneered the “pure-play foundry” business model, focusing exclusively on manufacturing integrated circuits for other companies rather than designing its own chips. This approach enabled the rise of “fabless” semiconductor firms and positioned TSMC as a central player in the global electronics supply chain.

TSMC serves a broad range of industries, producing chips used in high-performance computing, smartphones, automotive systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and consumer electronics. The company works with hundreds of customers worldwide and manufactures thousands of different products annually, reflecting its scale and technological breadth. Its advanced semiconductor processes—measured in nanometers—allow for smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient chips, making TSMC a key enabler of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced computing.

The company operates an extensive global manufacturing network, with the majority of its fabrication plants (“fabs”) located in Taiwan, alongside facilities in China, the United States, and Japan, and ongoing expansion into Europe. Its production capacity reaches tens of millions of wafers annually, supported by cutting-edge fabrication technologies and large-scale “gigafabs.” In addition to manufacturing, TSMC maintains customer support and engineering service offices across North America, Europe, and Asia, reinforcing its global reach.  Over the decades, TSMC has grown into a dominant force in the semiconductor industry, holding a leading share of the global foundry market and serving major technology companies such as Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, and Qualcomm. Its leadership in advanced chip manufacturing—particularly in sub-5-nanometer technologies—has allowed it to stay ahead of competitors and play a critical role in powering digital innovation worldwide.
