Basrah Gas Company (BGC) is an Iraqi joint venture founded in 2013, with a 25‑year concession. It's owned by South Gas Company (51%), Shell (44%), and Mitsubishi Corporation (5%). BGC processes associated gas from the Rumaila, West Qurna 1, and Zubair oilfields, transforming waste gas into cleaner energy—making it one of the biggest global initiatives to reduce gas flaring. Since its inception, BGC has increased its processing capacity from 250 mmscfd to 950 mmscfd, enough to generate approximately 3.5 GW of electricity, serving over 3 million Iraqi households. The company now meets more than 80% of Iraq’s LPG demand and has prevented over 160 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to removing over 3 million cars from roads. BGC employs over 5,000 people—around 96% Iraqi nationals—with a strong focus on local content, ethics, social investment (education, health) and sustainable community impact.
